Bridging History and Thrills: The Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge
Want an exciting adventure that combines engineering and beautiful views? Don’t miss the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. This impressive bridge spans the Colorado River, 1,500 feet downstream from the Hoover Dam. It is the highest concrete-arch bridge in the world and the second-highest in the U.S., standing 890 feet above the river.
Completed in 2010, the bridge was built to ease traffic over the dam and honors Mike O’Callaghan, a former Nevada governor, and Pat Tillman, an NFL player turned soldier. Both exemplified courage and service.
Walking along the bridge offers stunning views of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and Black Canyon. The 10-foot-wide pedestrian walkway, accessible from the Nevada side, has protective barriers. Plaques along the way explain the bridge’s design and history while you enjoy fresh air and the sound of the river below.
Plan Your Visit to the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge:
Visit the walkway for free from sunrise to sunset. Safety rules include no bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, or pets. Be prepared for wind and bring essentials like water, sunscreen, and hats.
You can walk about 0.8 miles from the free lot under the bridge on the Nevada side. Alternatively, park at the Hoover Dam Parking Garage for $10. A shuttle runs every 15 minutes from 9 am to 5:30 pm for $2 per person round trip.
Driving directions from Las Vegas:
Take U.S. 93 South toward Boulder City. Once there, for the quickest route, at Buchanan Blvd., stay on U.S. 93 (to the left) and follow the signs to Hoover Dam. If you want to see historic downtown Boulder City (a great place to grab a bite and peruse a variety of excellent shops), go straight onto Nevada Way and follow the signs to go through town.
